On Memorial day 2019, The Floyd County Fairgrounds was hit by a tornado. Our members jumped to action and helped clean up all summer long!

This is the FFA motto. It's what the members strive to live by. I know I've been posting photos of the FFA kids this weekend. What most of you don't know is the back story. I'm sure you heard, about a month ago, the middle part of Nebraska flooded, due to levees breaching, sending flood waters and ice downstream and breaching even more levees. Businesses were lost. Roads submerged and washed away. People lost their homes. But for the farmers and ranchers, their farms were flooded and cattle were washed away. One particular family, Drew and Kristy Wolfe of Schuyler, had 3 hours to evacuate. They have a 2500 head cattle operation. They finally returned home a week ago. They lost 1000+ head of cattle. (Nebraska is #2 or #3 in beef production) The Wolfes have a friend in Charles City, IA, who happens to be the news director at the local radio station. From my understanding, this is what happened next.....Kellan ( the radio guy) reached out to the Charles City FFA advisor. The Floyd County Cattlemen got involved. The Floyd County Beef Queen is a member of the Rockford FFA chapter (and past president). For the record, there are 2 public schools within Floyd County, Charles City CSD and Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock CSD. 10 kids from Charles City FFA and 7 kids from Rockford FFA signed up to go help. 3 advisors, the radio guy and some members of the Cattlemen caravaned to Schuyler to help the Wolfe family clean up. I will guarantee you, of the 17 kids that went, there are 17 different reasons for doing so. Not knowing the CC kids, I'll tell you about some of the Rockford kids. 1 boy's mother grew up 30 minutes from Schuyler and still has family in the area. 1 girl is the Floyd County Beef Queen (and yes, that is a HUGE honor!!) Another boy and his family lost their house to a fire 2 months ago. That's one helluva way to pay it forward!! Another girl is thinking about the National Guard and wanted to kinda experience what it would be like to help in a time of crisis. But all 17 just wanted to go help. NONE of them expected any notoriety. The people of Schuyler were waiting and apparently rolled out the red carpet. They were on the Omaha news. The people of Schuyler fed them and offered them their hospitality. As a parent of one of those kids, Thank you!! Yes, the kids actually did work. Cleaned up, fixed or tore out 5-6 miles of fencing. The radio station gave the kids 2 hours of air time to drum up donations to offset their trip. Businesses gave them supplies to help with clean up. You know that old saying about it takes a village? Sometimes those "villages" are 6 hours apart and now have an unbreakable bond. The kids are homeward bound. Sunburnt, blistered and tired. I can't wait to hear the stories! I know all of us parents are incredibly proud of all of the kids. Thank you. And thanks to all who helped them along the way.

Farm safety day making Headlines

10 members of the Rockford FFA helped teach 4th grade students from Floyd county about farm safety. Their topic was grain bin safety. They did a great job of working with what they know and making sure that the kids know what to do around a grain bin. They were also interviewed by KIMT about what to do. It was a cold day, but the students did great! 

Greenhand Fire up and District soils judging

On September 20th, we took 16 students to Fort Dodge to judge some soil and get fired up about FFA. It may have been a very wet day, but is was fun. The Greenhands got t-shirts and the Soils teams got 31 and 40 out of 55 teams. They did a great job for not ever having seen a soil pit before. Rebecca B was our top placing individual. 

Livestock Judging had an outstanding start

Congratulations to our Livestock Judging team on their impressive performance at the Clay County Fair. They placed 11th, one point away from the three-way tie at 8th. With 3 novice judgers and one with slight experience they knocked it out of the park!
Individually they had a great showing as well! Nate M., as a first time judger, was the top of the team with a score of 340. Kaden P. placed 1st individually in sheep and goats with two 50's and a 48. Sawyer S. and Olivia S. also did well in swine and sheep. Make sure you give these students a pat on the back for a job well done! 

National convention is october 23rd-26th. Congrats to those who were chosen to go:

COunty and state Fair updates

Both the Floyd County Fair and Iowa State fair were a success for our chapter. We had 14+ members showing at the county fair and 1 showing at the state fair. The students even competed in their first livestock judging contest of the season. We had one member place 7th overall individually and the team placed 6th. 
**FFA t-shirts are in! Ms. Hartman will be at the Floyd county fair to hand them out. Those who are showing for FFA get first priority! Find her to get your shirt!
